The Swachh Bharat Mission has Bill Gates’ Seal of Approval

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Image: Gates Notes
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received a bright review from Bill Gates for the implementation of Swachh Bharat in 2014. The mission aims to stop public defecation and clean the country’s streets for the health and safety of its citizens. Both Gates and the Indian public have praised Modi for his efforts and given him support throughout his journey to complete the mission.

Gates brought to light the fact that Modi took India’s sanitation problem very seriously and was bold enough to look for a solution despite the issue being sensitive, something very few leaders have attempted. Constructing 75 million new toilets across the country will save $106 billion or more every year.

Two and a half years after Swachh Bharat was put into place, the number of citizens with adequate sanitation tools rose from forty-two percent to sixty-three percent, and the project is expected to come to a close by October 2019. Each state has its own tracking system to determine whether it meets sanitation requirements or not.

Furthermore, nearly one-third of India’s total villages have abolished public defecation, compared to 2015’s one-tenth. Gates mentioned an app that helps citizens overcome their discomfort with the idea of toilets, as well as how impressed he was that Modi recruited Bollywood actors to speak openly about the issue.

Looking at the results and Bill Gates’ praise, it’s clear that Prime Minister Modi is taking steps in the right direction to give India a cleaner and brighter future.

Scientists Plan to Mimic Plastic-loving Caterpillar’s Abilities

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
The world’s plastic build-up could be gone within the next few decades thanks to a species of caterpillar that eats plastic bags. This caterpillar - the moth Galleria mellonella’s initial form - is known to eat beeswax from hives, and the creature’s molecular synthesis of this material works just as well for polyethylene, the thin, flexible plastic that makes up grocery bags.

Polyethylene is constructed at a shocking rate of eighty million tonnes per year, and effectively disposing of it has been a long-time problem. Although the material is biodegradable, the process lasts hundreds of years. Fortunately, plastic-eating caterpillars take less than sixty minutes to create holes in polyethylene bags, making them more susceptible to rapid breakdown.

The science behind this caterpillar’s plastic-destroying ability is still a mystery, but researchers plan to investigate and form a concrete solution for excess polyethylene. Some suspect that the insect’s microbes play a significant part in the deterioration process, which could be mimicked and applied to areas with plastic overload.

Of course, reducing the amount of products made with plastic will have a significant positive effect on the problem. However, the material cannot be eliminated completely without society suffering serious consequences.

If this study produces a remedy to our plastic build-up problem, we could be one step closer to restoring the planet’s health.

Waterloo Encounters a Green Bin Shortage while Garbage Rules Change

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Waterloo Region has recently changed its policy on urban waste collection, and they’ve encountered a problem. The day after the new policy was put into place, the demand for green bins surpassed the supply by a shocking amount.

Over 20,000 green bins were given out last year alone, compared to the annual norm of around 6,000. And now, only four months into this year, over 11,000 more have been distributed. Despite those somewhat frightening statistics, the situation is by no means unfixable.

The heightened demand for green bins in the city indicates that its citizens are dedicated to the cause, and already were before the waste program had even changed. When the new rules became valid, an unmanageable amount of bins was needed, and staff is working hard to produce more.

Waste management began creating and delivering green bins to houses seven years ago, and demand has been inconsistent since then. Although the backup green bin supply has been used up, the stockpile should be full again by the end of the month.

Waterloo Region reportedly still has some blue boxes up for grabs. Homeowners should keep a close eye on their district’s website for relevant updates.

Waste Bin Removal Test in New York Ends After Five Years

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
In an attempt to decrease garbage littered in its underground train system, New York took away its waste bins and watched citizens react. Instead of people discarding their garbage elsewhere, however, the volume of litter in the stations increased with the absence of the waste bins, causing the city to scrap the idea.

The experiment began in 2011, implemented in only two stations at first. By 2014, the number had grown to thirty-nine, but the test came to a close in 2016 after a surplus of waste and track fires were detected. With over 450 underground train stations in the city, excess litter quickly became a health and safety hazard that could not be tolerated.

The test’s organizers admit that their hope for not only littered waste, but waste in general, to decrease was somewhat unrealistic. The major American city is looking into better options to clean up litter on the tracks and prevent it from getting there at all.

Although the original test had adverse effects, it was a valiant effort nonetheless.

Longtime Nurse Turns Hospital’s Trash into Treasure

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Treehugger.com
Ever wonder what happens to the many plastic parts used to maintain hospital tools when they’re no longer needed? For one healthcare employee, they become a work of art.

Tilda Shalof was an ICU nurse at Toronto General Hospital for nearly three decades, and in that time, she collected hundreds of lids, levers, screws, and connectors of various colours. Why? Because none of them were true biomedical waste.

Having been removed from their tools before use and otherwise untouched, Shalof decided to bring the pieces home and put them to use again. With the help of two experienced artists, she created a thirty-six square foot mosaic of reds, blues, greens, yellows, purples, and oranges. The finished product has been mounted on the wall of Shalof’s old workplace.

The nurse-turned-radiologist even took the time to describe what the parts were all for. Everything from blood culture case lids to adrenaline injection tops make up the mosaic, all colour coded differently. The artwork, according to Shalof, is a sort of farewell to the many patients she tended to at Toronto General Hospital.

Shalof’s new radiology career is at a different hospital, and though she keeps on collecting pieces, she writes books in her spare time, too. In more ways than one, she has managed to turn waste into wonder and keep her creativity flowing.

Ohio Inmates Construct Computers out of Trash to Obtain Internet Connection

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Hacker News
A 2015 incident has been released to the public about two prisoners in an Ohio jail who created personal computers from discarded electronic parts. The inmates were able to conceal the computers in the training room ceiling and hook the devices up to the internet through the prison network.

This occurrence came to light after a year of collecting evidence in a recent fifty page report, written by the state’s Office of the Inspector. The parts recovered by inmates were part of a program in the correctional facility to reuse pieces of old electronics, reducing the building’s waste.

The two prisoners quickly secured a network connection to their devices and began looking through the digital files of their peers. Furthering their legal offence, they found ways to create imitation passes for restricted areas, fraudulent credit cards, and fatal weaponry. It was also determined that pornography sites, online chat rooms, forged signature certificates, and other related media were accessed.

Although only two inmates executed the entirety of the plan, they were aided by three others along the way, all of whom had some kind of involvement with the correctional facility’s rehabilitation programs. Each of the five prisoners is now in a new building.

Ohio’s prison staff will put preventative measures into place for the future, being sure to maintain programs that will allow behaved inmates to grow.

How One NGO is Using Recycled ‘Mata Ki Chunni’ to Make Wedding Dresses for the Under-Privileged

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
An Indian wedding is a big event in just about all possible ways. But it’s also expensive for many family, especially those with less money to spend on the event.

That’s why an NGO called Goonj, based in Delhi, has made it their mission to make sure people with limited financial resources to have all they desire out of their wedding. Goonj goes about this by obtaining wedding dresses that have been worn from people in wealthier cities, redesigning them and then distributing them through local panchayats to people in rural areas.

How? By reusing and recycling ‘mata ki chunni’ (which is often used in large amounts in religious ceremonies) to manufacture lehengas for women getting married. Since many dispose of their chunnis into the river or simply give them away to others, Goonj is asking for people to donate these items to make wedding kits.

With a touch of innovation and skill, this shimmery cloth makes can be used to make stunning apparel. Then there are the kits, which come with an assortment of items like purses, footwear, clothing, cosmetics and other makeup. Because of this, much of the expense for the bride’s and bridegroom’s kin is gone and now the wedding can be had for much less.

Since being founded, Goonj has been able to send 100s of kits to people in various regions, making so many lives better. Those who receive these kits talk about how they exceed their expectations and allow them to experience a bit of luxury that they would otherwise never have.

A standard Wedding Kit comes with wedding dresses for both the bridegroom and the bride, footwear, a purse, jewelry, general clothing, bed sheets, a set of utensils etc.

The First Ever Thrift Mall has Opened in Sweden

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
If you enjoy hunting for good deals and being eco-friendly, you’ll love the new mall in Eskilstuna, Sweden, that exclusively houses secondhand products in both original and repaired condition.

The shopping center, dubbed ReTuna Återbruksgalleria, allows shoppers to recycle their old items and take home new ones in a single trip. Donated items are cleaned and repaired as needed before being set up into smaller individual shops that each cater to a theme, including textiles, electronics, and outdoor equipment.

For hungry customers, ReTuna Återbruksgalleria offers an organic restaurant, and for those wanting to learn more about being kinder to the earth, there exists a specialized education program for recycling studies within the walls of the center.

Not only has this revolutionary new mall prevented garbage buildup by more than a margin, it has also provided fifty stable jobs for Swedish entrepreneurs and repair workers. These employment and waste reduction benefits are nothing to scoff at, and in fact set an example for other developed countries.

This new facility has produced nothing but positive results. The nation’s people can participate proudly, knowing they have contributed to the preservation of the planet and saved money while doing it.

Got Garbage? Get a Fire-Breathing Drone

https://youtu.be/GYJF-k8enz0
There could be no need for dumps or days dedicated to street cleaning in the future thanks to a utility company located in the Chinese city of Xiangyang. Their newest and perhaps most useful creation is a remote controlled fire-breathing drone that incinerates waste with just a few powerful blasts.

It was the constant garbage pileup on local power lines that prompted the development of this unconventional product. Currently, a cherry picker equipped with several technicians travels to the pileup points and manually cleans the lines. It’s a fine fix for the time being, but it’s too dangerous and time-consuming to continue indefinitely.

By bringing fire-breathing drones into the picture, the job becomes effortless, and technicians can focus on more important tasks. The clean-up team is swapped out with one drone managed by a pair of workers, who control the drone to set the garbage aflame from the safety of the ground below.

A project as specific as this one will need time before it’s perfect and readily available. The firestarter drone isn’t, however, the first of its kind. Last year, the US formally tested flame-equipped drones approved by the FAA and NASA to spark fires that remained tame. Additionally, university researchers at the Homestead National Monument of America, located in Nebraska, experimented with a different drone that serves the same purpose. This drone releases flammable pellets that ignite upon impact, and it managed to spread fire across twenty-six acres of long grass.

Even more bizarre is the possibility of drone-cooking, which uses a firestarter drone to torch raw food into a hot meal. So far, only a turkey has been tested on. As long as they serve a good purpose, drones are sure to be part of our future.

Bottle Deposits to End Plastic Ocean Pollution

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
How? By introducing a small and refundable deposit on all cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles to help promote recycling for the 16 million plastic bottles that are thrown in the trash every day.

Why does this matter?

In the United Kingdom for example, over 38.5 million single-use plastic bottles and 58 million cans are used by consumers every day. Worse, only half of these wind up recycle, so it’s not surprising that so many wind up in our oceans and our beaches.

Plastic bottles also take about 450 years to fully break down, which can kill ocean life, harm ecosystems and harm our beaches.

By putting a small deposit on all cans and plastic bottles, we could hugely increase the amount recycled, thereby reducing marine plastic pollution.

Volvo’s First Electric Car is Coming Fast

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
The company’s first electric car is expected by 2019 and costs $40,000. More details have been revealed by Volvo about the car it plans to bring to market in 2019.

The company told automotive news that the car’s range will be 250 miles and it will cost between $35,000-$40,000 for a starter model.

This is the latest development in a market battle among the automotive giants. They want to compete with companies like GM by producing long-range electric vehicles that can be mass marketed and outdo previous versions.

The Chevy Bolt by GM starts at $36,620 and comes with a 238-mile range. Tesla is also upping its game with a new Model 3 Sedan, expected to cost $35,000 and come with a range of 215, by the end of the year.

However, Volvo has yet to provide details on the specific kind of electric vehicle it will bring to market in 2019. The Swedish car giant entered the electric vehicle space in August 2015 by releasing a plug-in hybrid version of its XC90 SUV. By 2025, the company is hoping to put one million electric vehicles on the road worldwide.

Exercise Clothes, Yoga Pants may be #1 Cause of Sea Pollution

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
According to scientists and researchers from the Gulf Coast, comfy clothes are a major culprit when it comes to the plastic that's being found in oceans and perhaps even getting into seafood. A 2-year long study has begun to examine microscopic plastics in the Texas and Florida Keys waters.

The initiative, headed by Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium will also look into the fact that an alarming amount of microfibers — even tinier than microbeads — were found trickling down faucets and drains.
Yoga bottoms, fleece-lined coats, sweat-resistant athletic gear and other clothing produced from synthetic material sheds microscopic plastic fibers — also known as "microfibers" — when laundered. Wastewater systems flush the microfibers into natural waterways, eventually reaching the sea. Marine animals can even ingest these harmful microfibers.

Scientists at first expected to mainly find microbeads — those infamous tiny plastic balls that United States banned from all cosmetic products 2 years ago due to the hazardous affect on the environment and wildlife.

What we need is an improvement in washing machine technology and also in waste water treatment plants so that we can perhaps begin to filter out these fibres.

Here is Your Daily Reminder to Just Hang in There!

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
A real-life motivation poster appeared on Friday, when a commuter noticed a raccoon hanging onto the back of a garbage truck as both vehicles were moving along the streets of Arlington, Virginia. The commuter was naturally taken aback by the sight of a raccoon hanging onto the garbage truck for dear life.

After spotting the animal in the Rosslyn neighborhood, a reporter from Politico let the garbage truck driver know what was going on. Three police officers eventually made their way to the scene with catch poles, only to discover that the raccoon was now inside the truck container. Once the raccoon was safely captured, it was returned to a nearby park. Animal Disposal Services later reported that the animal had been safely removed from the situation and that it was now safely back in its natural surroundings.

Imperfect Vegetables Need Love Too!

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Are you a picky eater? How do you feel about the way your food “looks”? Many of us have foods that we like and dislike. However, an alarming number of people base their prejudices with food on not just how the food tastes, but on how the food looks. When it comes to fruits and veggies in particular, some have the following train of thought - “If it looks weird, or even gross, then it’s probably going to make me sick in some form or fashion.”

This is a terrible way to think about food, particularly items like fruits and vegetables. It amounts to a great deal of waste. This is waste that damages our planet, hurts your wallet, and destroys food that is largely no different from anything that “looks” fine.

More specifically, it is waste that we can do something about.

An Easy Way To Prevent Food Waste?

For a while now, overseas markets throughout the North America and Europe have been selling fruits and veggies at a discounted price, and the only qualification is that the fruit has to be “ugly.” New Zealand has also recently started a similar initiative.

Created by Countdown Supermarket, The Odd Bunch has been created as a means of selling produce with minor imperfections at a discounted price. The idea is to give a new lease on life to fruits and vegetables that are otherwise fine, beyond a few minor visual problems, while also offering consumers the chance to get fantastic produce at a discounted price.

The endeavor is working from humble beginnings, at least for now. Half-damaged stone fruit and carrots will be made available at the start, and you can expect more fruits and veggies to make their way to shelves through this initiative over the coming months.

Remember while shopping that just because something looks a little beat-up, it doesn’t mean that it is actually bad. Soft tomatoes can make for a great sauce. Floury apples can be used in a variety of different recipes. You can even cut the bruised bits away from pieces of stone fruit.

Tips to Stop Wasting Food

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Most of us don’t set out to waste food. We do our best, but there are still times when we have to justify throwing something out. This could be some bread that we didn’t get around to finishing, some yogurt, fruit, or even some neglected leftovers. We’re of course not thrilled to be throwing these things away. Most of us understand the various short-term and long-term consequences of wasting food, to both ourselves, and to the world at large.

Concerns About Wasting Food

Food waste can create methane gases in landfills, which is one of the major contributors to climate change. For these reasons alone, not to mention the fact that wasted resources could have been used to theoretically feed more people, are all things to keep in mind. It compels us to face the reality that if anything is going to change for the better in terms of wasting food, then all of us will need to reevaluate our behavior.

Unfortunately, making changes in this arena can prove to be easier said than done. To be fair, people have a lot of questions about food in terms of saving, preserving it, and expiration dates. There are also naturally concerns related to cleanliness and health. After all, no one wants to get sick from eating something that’s gone bad.

The good news is that there are several things you can do in order to lessen food wastage. These are things you can do that will not put your health at risk and better yet, they’re super simple!

How To Stop Wasting Food
  • Keep a diary: For one week, keep a diary of all the food that you throw out. If possible, figure out how much you throw out in a given day, how much money you’re wasting each day, and why you threw the items out in the first place. At the end of the week, you should have a clear idea of your behavior. At this point, you can likely spot and make a number of simple changes on your own.
  • Make a list: Before you go shopping, make sure you have a list that is as specific as possible. This can prevent you from buying stuff you don’t need or buying too much of something.
  • Storage: Make sure you are storing things correctly, including fruit like apples and oranges.
  • Ask around: There are groups on Facebook and elsewhere that are dedicated to helping people reduce the amount of food they waste. Don’t be afraid to explore these resources for yourself.

Garbage Disposal Care Tips

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
One of the great things about garbage disposals is that they’re fairly low maintenance. There are however, a few simple tips to keep in mind in order to avoid damaging your disposal:
  • Avoid Fibrous Foods: This list includes banana skins, broccoli, celery, corn husks, and potato peels. These can get tangled up in the blades, stopping them altogether.
  • Bones and Eggshells: These can cause damage to the blades over time.
  • When Retrieving an Item from your Disposal: The first thing you are going to want to do is make sure the disposal has been switched off. Even when it is, you don’t want to use your hands to get anything out. Tongs are a smarter tool. If you have to remove items that are tangled in the disposal, make sure to use the wrench that came with your garbage disposal.
  • Bad Odours: You can eliminate awful odours by adding cut up lemons to your disposal, turning it on, and adding warm water. Avoid hot water, as it can actually worsen the clog.
  • Cleaning: Ice cubes and 1 cup of rock salt can accomplish a lot. Run it for a few seconds, but don’t use things like bleach or commercial drain cleaner.

Tory Abandons Own Waste Collection Privatization Plans

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Opting to avoid being associated with a failure, Mayor Tory has taken leave of his plan to contract out garbage. A recent staff report on the issue has been sent back for additional study and it would seem that at least for the time being, the issue has been closed.

The Death of a 2014 Campaign Promise

When the possibility of defeat on a 2014 campaign promise to further privatize waste collection became increasingly apparent, Mayor John Tory did what might have been the only sensible thing that could be done. He now says that additional facts are going to be needed on this issue, which has divided council to a significant degree in recent times.

Critics of the plan point to the fact that Mayor Tory has struggled to generate necessary support for the measure. Had Mayor Tory continued on with his initial plan and 2014 campaign promise, he may have found himself staring down the barrel of his most significant defeat before council in recent memory.

A vote of 40-4 was passed in favor of tabling the measure for additional research and discussion.

CUPE Local 416 members were in attendance for the decision. Their reaction to the news was one of celebration. The Local 416 President in particular celebrated the announcement, while making it clear that this decision clearly favored the people of Toronto. Lobbying by anti-privatization groups throughout the area were extremely vocal during the debate on the measure.

To be sure, Tory and his supporters tried on repeated occasions to create a positive image of their intentions. Tory went so far as to pose for a photograph with a West End family, which has been enjoying a number of cost-saving benefits since implementing private waste collection measures over twenty years ago. However, a meeting held by the public works committee indicated that it actually costs less per household to have municipal employees handle picking up trash in one area, as opposed to the cost-saving benefits enjoyed by another area.

Where does the Measure go from Here

The Toronto Environmental Alliance also weighed in on the issue. They said that diversion rates for waste are lower west of Yonge Street served through private collectors, as opposed to Scarborough. TEA has also demanded more information on this complex issue.

When will the issue come up again? There is a good deal of debate on the subject. Opponents are confident that this issue will not return prior to the next municipal election. City council has been praised for making the decision to wait for more information to come through. We can be certain that this additional information is going to come at some point in the near future. What this information is going to reveal is currently a matter of debate. For now, opponents are confident that they are not going to have to worry about this issue for a long time to come. Tory himself has been praised for handling the situation in a way that allows for both sides to take a break, gather more information, and return at some point to resume the conversation. It is believed that an action such as this one will keep the city of Toronto from descending into needless, destructive bickering.

At the same time, the decision is being praised as a clear way to avoid a rash decision. Opponents of privatizing waste management believe that Toronto residents have earned a respite from an issue that became very serious, very quickly.

Sweden to Import Trash from Other Countries

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/
Sweden is once again creating effective solutions for waste management in perhaps the most globally impactful way yet. Waste management is not a new problem and remains a rapidly growing problem that worsens year after year, lacking the resolutions/advancement necessary to handle the issue.

"There is no end in sight to this trend. Public waste systems in cities cannot keep pace with urban expansion.” the U.N. agency notes.

And while many countries have failed to efficiently resolve their waste management issues, Sweden is capitalizing on them. The frigid country that prides itself as being environmentally advanced, has created a waste management system that turns the energy produced from waste into recyclable power that is used to heat the country throughout the harsh winters.

The revolutionary recycling system is so efficient that the country has begun to run out of enough waste to consistently heat the nation properly and so has created innovative measures that will benefit multiple nations.

Sweden, taking note that other countries are still not capitalizing off of the power that is generated from waste management, has reached out to neighboring countries such as England and Norway to actually import their trash to recycle for its energy producing qualities.

The neighboring countries that are participating now have the opportunity to dispose of their waste in a beneficial manner which makes the Swedish recycling system one of the most globally impactful in the world to date. By assisting in the resolution of waste management in multiple nations, the recycling system the Scandinavian country has implemented should have waste powerhouses such as the U.S. and Japan taking note.

Not only does Sweden benefit from the heat that they will produce from the recyclable waste, but they’re also being paid to take on the international trash.

With over half of the world’s population lacking access to proper waste management facilities and systems, this could be the answer everyone has been looking for.

Loveland Deploys Garbage Truck Snowplows

Loveland, Colorado residents experienced a somewhat strange site recently. They looked to their streets to find that snowplows were working to make the roads manageable again. However, what they saw was a good deal different from what they expected. With plows attached, the city had deposited a number of garbage trucks to deal with the recent snowfall.

This is not the first time the city of Loveland used garbage trucks converted into snowplows. A pilot program was carried out in 2009. The following year, the city added several more garbage trucks to the plan. The results have been extremely encouraging so far, with the trucks being used in the event that six inches or more has fallen. The city says that the trucks are generally only used once or twice a year since they are only deployed in the event of a serious snowstorm. There are eleven trucks that utilize a plow and then there are an additional four pickup trucks that utilize a plow in a cul-de-sac.

After the Solid Waste Fleet deploys, the cost to the city is around thirteen grand per day. This crew runs trash pickups and they are rerouted to a regular plow schedule while maintaining their own routes.

Man Works to Save Trees with Plastic Waste

Aghan Oscar is a Kenyan man who grew tired of watching trash fill the beaches of his city. He elected to do something about it, and the results thus far have been pretty inspiring. He has essentially come up with an effective way to not only recycle these plastics, but to also take steps to ensure the trees are being protected as well.

In the wake of his desire to clean up his beaches, Oscar established Continental Renewable Energy. This Nairobi-based company works to collect garbage and convert it into materials that can be used to create poles and street signs. The timber that is traditionally used for these products has a couple of problematic downsides to consider. In the first place, the timber is susceptible to vandals and it is also easy to destroy. Worse yet, it is often stolen and used as firewood while also contributing to deforestation. Oscar and his company is working to change all of that.

So far, the results have been highly encouraging. The Kenya National Highways Authority has already purchased more than twenty-eight thousand poles from Oscar’s company. Using sand and post-consumer materials, Oscar and his company have created an approach to manufacturing these items that allows them to offer something that is not only more durable, but also comes with the benefit of being more affordable as well. It appears to be a win-win on every possible front. Another fantastic element to this company that is worth keeping in mind is the fact that the company is owned and operated by Kenyans.

The future for this company looks very bright indeed. Over 250 locals are currently employed by the company, which is working hard to meet an increasingly elaborate demand for their creation. The company believes that measures such as theirs can go a long way towards saving the planet.

Zera Food Recycler from Whirlpool Turns Scraps into Fertilizer

With just the single touch of a button, the new Zera Food Recycler from Whirlpool promises to turn scraps into fertilizer. While this may sound too good to be true, it is indeed a concept that could soon become popularized throughout the world.

Many major cities employ composting services. However, for those who do not have access to such services, composting must continue to be handled the old-fashioned way. As anyone who has ever composted before can tell you, the whole process can be time-consuming and extremely unpleasant. Furthermore, without constant maintenance, a compost pile can quickly become useless.

The Zera Food Recycler from Whirlpool hopes to change things for the world at large. This kitchen appliance promises to not only turn your scraps into compost, but it promises to do this with virtually zero hassle. The only things the machine is unable to take care of are bones and pits. Otherwise, all you’’ have to do is load the device, hit the button, and step back as it does its job. The top of the Zera is designed to keep the product at counter height. When you are ready to dispose of things, sweeping your leftovers away can be handled easily enough.

Designed by W Labs, the product will be launching on crowdfunding sites soon. However, the point of this move is not to raise funds for the project. After all, Whirlpool is a company that can pay to have new gadgets developed, tested, and released. The move is largely being done to generate popularity for a product that is about to connect with a market that is currently untested.

Auto Mall allegedly buried 140 Gallons of Hazardous Waste

The indictment alleges that Mahoney’s Auto Mall and a 33-year old employee buried over 140 gallons of waste on the company’s property. There are 12 charges against the employee and the used car dealership/automotive repair facility.

The company and employee are now facing one felony and eight misdemeanors (environmental law violations) that involve burying hazardous waste. The violations allegedly occurred over the summer when New York Environmental Conservation (DEC) authorities found multiple gallon sized barrels filled with discarded motor oil, oil filters, and discarded tires.

Alleged Violations:-

After DEC made the discovery, they ordered a lab analysis of the liquid. The lab found the hazardous material benzene in each of the four 55-gallon drums. The benzene levels surpassed the allowed .5 mg per liter.

The laboratory analysis also uncovered other hazardous material (toluene, ethyl-benzene, and xylene) which can contaminate and pollute the environment. The New York state Attorney General said that these materials are what constitute the waste as hazardous and illegal.

DEC authorities also discovered an unprotected amount of solid waste, which included construction debris and scarps, roofing items, garbage, and linens. This counts as operating an unlawful “solid waste management facility”. The appropriate DEC permits were never applied for nor granted to the auto mall.

The auto repair shop had violations that increased the volume of charges. DEC personnel also saw a channel (concrete) in the repair facility floor, allowing “automotive fluids” to drain into a pit. After draining into this pit, the fluids were moved to the ground beside the auto shop. Tests showed that there was petroleum-contaminated soil beside the auto shop.

Conclusion:-

The felony charge: Third degree public health endangerment, which, if found guilty thereof, comes with a possible prison sentence of four years and a potential fine of up to $150,000. Misdemeanor charges (8) are for fourth degree allegations of “endangering public health, safety or environmental” damage, including a possible one year jail sentence and fines up to $37,500.

The charge of “operating an unpermitted solid waste management facility” provides for maximum fines up to $22,500 per day while in violation. This situation could prove highly costly to the auto mall and the employee if they’re found guilty of the charges, which seems rather likely.

Backpacker Christmas Party Leaves Sydney’s Coogee Beach in Ruins

In the aftermath of a particularly destructive Christmas party at Coogee Beach in Sydney, officials were left with no other choice. Alcohol is now going to be banned in the park, after approximately fifteen tons of garbage was left by the backpacker Christmas party.

Over 10, 000 partiers descended upon the beach for the big party in question. The resulting aftermath compelled a council in Sydney to enforce a ban on alcoholic beverages, designed to last through the end of the summer. The Christmas Day party left the aforementioned fifteen tons of garbage, in addition to a considerable amount of damage in other regards.

The ban was announced for not only Coogee Beach, but for all of the property in the surrounding area. This includes a number of parks. The ban is expected to be enforced until the end of the summer, and it is believed that the Randwick City Council was left with no other choice, when faced with the garbage and other undesirable elements that were left behind.

However, some would say that while the ban is a direct result of the recent Christmas chaos, it is not the first time that the issue of backpackers and parties on park/reserve property has been brought up. Some have been trying to get the city council to do something about the issue for a long time, arguing that the parties and general behavior from backpackers has left it difficult for locals to enjoy the park.

Few seem to argue that the backpackers are the chief cause of the problem. Many have taken to social media to express their thoughts on the matter, with many making it clear that they believe backpackers to be the primary source of the problem. Some have even taken to posting videos and other pieces of evidence across social media.

At the party in question, 3 were arrested.

Hаulаgе Services

http://www.garbagebinrentals.ca/waste-collection-removal-disposal-blog/369-haulage-services.html
Choosing thе right hеаvу hаulаgе and trаnѕроrtаtiоn is very imроrtаnt. It оftеn takes quite a bit оf rеѕеаrсh tо mаkе sure уоu select thе right соmраnу fоr уоu. After аll, уоur material iѕ рrесiоuѕ tо both you аnd уоur сuѕtоmеr.

Whеn conducting a ѕimрlе Intеrnеt search for роtеntiаl hаulаgе соmраniеѕ, it iѕ еаѕу to become оvеrwhеlmеd by thе vаѕt numbеr of offered ѕеrviсеѕ. Hоw dо уоu choose the right оnе? Whаt ѕhоuld уоu be lооking оut fоr? And hоw can you be sure that thеу hаvе thе necessary equipment tо hаndlе уоur goods/loads? Wе have соmрilеd a liѕt оf ԛuеѕtiоnѕ that уоu need tо соnѕidеr whеn сhооѕing the right hеаvу hаulаgе соmраnу, ѕо rеаd on to find the right соmраnу fоr уоu.

Dо your gооdѕ rеԛuirе hаndling in a сеrtаin wау?

More often than nоt, you will find thаt уоur load/goods will nееd to bе hаndlеd with grеаt саrе, whеthеr thеѕе goods аrе frаgilе соmрutеr соmроnеntѕ оr a dеlivеrу оf vehicles. Make ѕurе thаt уоur selected hаulаgе соmраnу саn handle the lоаd with the саrе thаt it dеѕеrvеѕ. Thiѕ requires making sure thаt they have the necessary equipment аnd driver trаining. Experience iѕ also аn imроrtаnt fасtоr whеn соnѕidеring thе handling of gооdѕ. Dоеѕ уоur heavy hаulаgе соmраnу have thе nесеѕѕаrу еxреriеnсе in handling уоur tуреѕ оf gооdѕ?

Arе уоur gооdѕ to bе dеlivеrеd in ѕресifiс timеframe?

Heavy haulage companies have different views whеn it comes tо transportation lоgiѕtiсѕ. Sоmе can рiсk uр gооdѕ en rоutе tо оthеr pick-ups оr drор-оffѕ. Mаkе ѕurе that if you hаvе an аgrееd timеframe with your client that уоur hаulаgе соmраnу can match thiѕ. Make sure thеу understand the rоutе in full before receiving a ԛuоtе for thе trаnѕроrtаtiоn.

Dоеѕ уоur chosen соmраnу have the necessary inѕurаnсе?

Onе of the ѕinglе mоѕt important factors tо think about whеn сhооѕing the correct hеаvу hаulаgе соmраnу is thе load thаt they will be саrrуing. For еxаmрlе, thеу mау bе collecting a multimillion-pound jet engine. If thiѕ is the саѕе, mаkе ѕurе that thеу аrе inѕurеd tо саrrу goods of thiѕ vаluе. If not, thеn lооk еlѕеwhеrе. Thеrе are mаnу companies out thеrе thаt would bе аblе tо dо so and it iѕ not wоrth the riѕk.

Lastly, whеn gеtting ԛuоtеѕ fоr haulage соmраniеѕ mаkе ѕurе thаt уоu hаvе аt lеаѕt 3 and thаt уоu givе the same rеԛuirеmеntѕ. This wау you саn be ѕurе that уоu аrе gеtting the best роѕѕiblе рriсе fоr уоur trаnѕроrtаtiоn needs.

Sweden is Running out of Waste

Sоmеthіng іnсrеdіblе has been tаkіng place іn Swеdеn оvеr thе раѕt years, ѕоmеwhаt оf a “recycling rеvоlutіоn.” Currеntlу, lеѕѕ thаn оnе реrсеnt оf thе gаrbаgе рrоduсеd іn Swedish hоmеѕ еndѕ up іn a lаndfіll. Thе оthеr ninety-nine percent is rесусlеd or соmроѕtеd. Swеdеn ѕеtѕ аn example bу mаkіng rесусlіng an essential for sustainability and the rest of the world should follow suit. The country recycles 1.5 billion bоttlеѕ аnd cans аnnuаllу, a ѕtаggеrіng аmоunt for a рорulаtіоn оf about 9.6million.

Back іn 2013, In tеrmѕ оf rubbish, Swеdеѕ оnlу produced a mеаѕlу 461 kіlоgrаmѕ (1,106 роundѕ) of wаѕtе average реr уеаr—lеѕѕ thаn 1% of dіѕсаrded items ended uр іn lаndfіllѕ. This іѕ ѕlіghtlу bеlоw thе half-ton аvеrаgе іn the rest оf Eurоре
Swеdеn іѕ аlmоѕt thеrе. Mоrе thаn 99 реr сеnt of аll household waste іѕ rесусlеd in оnе wау оr аnоthеr. This mеаnѕ that the country has gоnе through ѕоmеthіng оf a recycling rеvоlutіоn іn thе last dесаdе.
Today, recycling ѕtаtіоnѕ аrе as a rulе nо more thаn 300 meters frоm аnу rеѕіdеntіаl аrеа. Mоѕt Swеdеѕ separate all rесусlаblе wаѕtе іn their hоmеѕ and dероѕіt іt іn ѕресіаl соntаіnеrѕ іn thеіr blосk оf flats оr drop іt оff at a rесусlіng station. Few other nations dероѕіt lеѕѕ іn rubbish dumрѕ.
Swеdеn hаѕ bееn оvеrlу соnсеrnеd аbоut tіdіnеѕѕ аnd сlеаnlіnеѕѕ bесаuѕе their іmрrеѕѕіvе commitment tо аn есо-frіеndlу world has an interesting еffесt оn еlесtrісіtу рrоduсtіоn.
Swеdеn has 32 рlаntѕ that аrе dеvеlореd for the рurроѕе of their wаѕtе tо еnеrgу рrоgrаm. Thіѕ type of еnеrgу рrоduсtіоn іnvоlvеѕ furnасеѕ which are filled wіth gаrbаgе аnd burnеd tо gеnеrаtе ѕtеаm. Thе gаѕ іѕ then uѕеd to ѕріn turbіnеѕ tо produce electricity that is transferred tо the роwеr grіd аnd transmission lines.
Thіѕ рrосеѕѕ саrrіеd оut in sweden іѕ to help rеduсе toxins that gо іntо the grоund. Swеdіѕh Wаѕtе Management соmmunісаtіоnѕ director Annа-Cаrіn Grірwеll explained іn a ѕtаtеmеnt that “Whеn wаѕtе sits іn lаndfіllѕ, lеаkіng mеthаnе gas аnd оthеr greenhouse gаѕѕеѕ, іt is оbvіоuѕlу nоt gооd for thе еnvіrоnmеnt”
Swеdеn іmроrtѕ garbage frоm Irеlаnd, UK, Itаlу and Norway tо еnаblе thеm to maintain thе рrоgrаm.
Don’t Trash It- Repair It
Mаnу municipalities аlѕо encourage consumers to separate fооd wаѕtе. And аll of thіѕ іѕ reused, rесусlеd оr соmроѕtеd.
Nеwѕрареrѕ are turnеd іntо рареr mаѕѕ, bottles аrе reused or mеltеd іntо nеw items, рlаѕtіс соntаіnеrѕ become рlаѕtіс rаw mаtеrіаl; fооd is соmроѕtеd аnd bесоmеѕ soil оr biogas through a complex chemical рrосеѕѕ. Rubbіѕh truсkѕ аrе оftеn run on recycled еlесtrісіtу оr biogas. Wаѕtеd wаtеr is purified tо thе еxtеnt оf being роtаblе. Special rubbish truсkѕ gо аrоund cities and pick uр еlесtrоnісѕ аnd hazardous waste such аѕ сhеmісаlѕ. Phаrmасіѕtѕ ассерt leftover mеdісіnе. Swedes tаkе their lаrgеr wаѕtе, ѕuсh аѕ a used TV оr brоkеn furnіturе, tо rесусlіng centers оn the оutѕkіrtѕ of the сіtіеѕ.
Sweden hаѕ many approaches tо reduce thе rаtе оf unеmрlоуmеnt in thе соuntrу. Swedish Fіnаnсе аnd Consumption Minister ѕаіd іn a vіdео thаt "the government іѕ ѕеttіng аѕіdе ѕkіllѕ to hеlр the consumers whо аrе ѕhоwіng ѕіgnѕ of mаkіng a dіffеrеnсе bу hеlріng them tо асt іn a ѕuѕtаіnаblе way"
The gоvеrnmеnt wants thіngѕ thаt would nоrmаllу bе thrown іn a thrash bin ѕuсh аѕ bісусlеs, ѕhоеѕ аnd сlоtheѕ to be rераіrеd іnѕtеаd of bеіng thrown аwау. Thіѕ wоuld give way fоr new еmрlоуmеnt opportunities. People аrе аvаіlаblе with rеԛuіrеd ѕkіllѕ tо fix these thіngѕ in thе lаbоur mаrkеt, ѕо a lоt оf реорlе саn gain from thіѕ initiative in a соuрlе оf months rather than in a year.
Taxes wоuld bе imposed оn іtеmѕ thаt аrе bought bу реорlе thаt wоn't bе rераіrеd tо create awareness among сuѕtоmеrѕ and encourage them to purchase sustainable items.

Little Girl’s Birthday Wish is to Spend Time with Friendly Garbage Man

little_girl_meets_garbage_man_for_birthday.jpg
Shareably
A wоndеrful lіttlе gіrl nаmеd Brооklуn surprised mаnу wіth hеr birthday wіѕh. Many little gіrlѕ and bоуѕ would ask fоr trending toys аѕ their bіrthdау wish. Thіѕ young gіrl is ѕо fаѕсіnаtіng іn thе ѕеnѕе thаt hеr bіrthdау wish wаѕ so rаrе. Shе asked to meet thе lосаl garbage mаn who retrieves thеіr duѕtbіn.
Thе gаrbаgе mаn, knоwn аѕ Delvar, drіvеѕ his gаrbаgе truсk еvеrу Thurѕdау thrоugh brooklyn's nеіghbоurhооd in Blооmіngtоn, Illіnоіѕ.
The garbage mаn has bееn so frіеndlу tо the girl, knоwn fоr always flashing a smile, that thеу tаggеd him as “оur favorite аwеѕоmе ѕmіlеу gаrbаgе mаn.” Evеrу Thursday, Brооklуn wаіtѕ fоr the аrrіvаl оf thе truсk in frоnt оf hеr house аnd she is always anxious to mееt thе garbage mаn.
Brооklуn'ѕ mоthеr роѕtеd оn her fасеbооk wаll as ѕhе revealed hоw they meet the garbage mаn еvеrу Thurѕdау:
It ѕtаrtеd wіth wаvіng from thе window, thеn we hаd tо trу and bе оutѕіdе to wаvе, аnd whеn we mіѕѕеd thе truсk drіvіng bу thе hоuѕе, I’d drive аrоund thе neighborhood tо find thе gаrbаgе truck аnd wаvе оn оur way оut thе dооr in thе mоrnіngѕ. Evеrу Thurѕdау, my hеаrt іѕ full when I see thе joy thаt оur аmаzіng garbage mаn brings Brooklyn whеn hе hоnkѕ аnd wаvеѕ аt her wіth a BIG smile.
Brооklуn'ѕ bіrthdау ѕurрrіѕіnglу іѕ оn a Thurѕdау, ѕо thе gіrl аnd hеr mother dесіdеd to mееt thе garbage mаn rаthеr thаn wаvіng at hіm whісh thеу hаvе аlwауѕ bееn dоіng. Thе lіttlе gіrl wаѕ hоldіng a сuрсаkе іn hеr hаnd and anxiously wаіtіng fоr the gаrbаgе man tо arrive.
Upon Delvar's arrival аt their house, Brооklуn’ѕ mother told him thаt Brooklyn сhеrіѕhes him a lоt аnd ѕhе is аlwауѕ hарру tо ѕее him еvеrу Thurѕdау. Shе thаnkеd hіm fоr being ѕо frіеndlу tо thеm аnd tо hеr ѕurрrіѕе, Delvar аlѕо said he is аlwауѕ looking fоrwаrd tо mееtіng Brооklуn еvеrу Thurѕdау аѕ thе lіttlе gіrl іѕ аlwауѕ аnxіоuѕ tо mееt him tоо.
Dеlvаr says hе аlwауѕ mаkеs ѕurе to them every week еvеn though іѕ buѕу wіth mееtіngѕ every Thursday mоrnіng and аlwауѕ tries tо get out оf the mееtіng in a hurry ѕо аѕ tо see them.
Thе lіttlе girl’s birthday wіѕh wаѕ fulfilled аѕ ѕhе mеt wіth thе gаrbаgе mаn аnd took рісturеѕ wіth hіm. Brooklyn wаѕ overjoyed thаt her birthday wіѕh came truе. Whаt a heart warming story!
