Why Sitework is a Necessary Step in Preparing a Construction Site

Preparing a site for construction is a key component to the success of a project. Depending on the requirements of a construction, there may be any number of things done to prepare the site. As a critical piece to any construction, sitework typically centers on any of five unique processes.

 Clearing the site
The first preparatory process involved in sitework and one that is quite standard among all construction sites is clearing and grubbing. At this stage, one removes any trees, bushes, or plants from the site. Depending on the extent of the vegetation located on a site, there may be more to it than a simple clear. In the event of more substantial work, always ensure environmental regulations and local laws are followed.
 Stabilization
To maximize the safety of a construction site and to ensure the long-term success of a structure, subgrade stabilization needs to happen. This involves stabilizing the soil levels found immediately below the topsoil. By doing this stabilization, you guard against the ground shifting or caving in while the project is ongoing or after completed. When this step is left undone, it opens up the possibility of foundation cracks, structural damage, and even a complete building collapse.

 Erosion control
Construction sites expose the ground to significant issues regarding weather, erosion, and the potential of collapse. Proper erosion control methods need to be taken to protect against a site becoming unsafe. By failing to take this step, workers and equipment may be placed in danger. Delivering a quality product on schedule and on budget requires safety precautions, such as erosion control, to be taken. The expense of not doing so is a potential loss of human life.
 Excavation
Excavation is a key component of sitework that is very common among many construction sites. The process of excavation, as so many contractors already know, is the removal of soil, rocks, and other ground materials that do not need to be there. This part of sitework can require significant time and expense, depending on the site selected. This requires construction workers with specific experience in excavation to be able to accomplish.
 Drainage systems
The last stage of sitework that construction site managers should be aware of is drainage systems. A high quality drainage system will help get any rain water out from the area, protecting equipment and construction workers on the job. The process of establishing a drainage system, again, maximizes on-site safety while ensuring workers are being protected from hazard.
The importance of sitework in the Canadian construction industry is high. Fortunately most contractors recognize how integral sitework is to safety and do what needs to be done to ensure all parties are protected.
The preliminary work in getting a site prepped is sometimes timely and intensive but it is a necessary part of the construction process. The preparatory activities a contractor chooses to follow through on depends on the site and the environmental conditions that surround it. By accomplishing sitework, a contractor sets the tone for the remainder of the project, communicating to stakeholders that they hold safety as a priority and are prepared to get the work done.

Now that we’ve identified the different types of sitework and the factors that play into it, understand that keeping good sitework as a top priority in your construction contracting business is the right thing to do.

4 Key Signs that you’ve Chosen the Right Dumpster Rental Company

So you’re about to get started on a construction, renovation or demolition project but you don’t exactly know where to put all the garbage you’re about to make – we’ve got the perfect solution!
Junk removal is made very simple and easy with the right dumpster rental company to assist. That said, with at least a few different companies to choose from, how do you know you’ve gone with the right one – check out this list of signs to look for. We want you to be confident in the company you choose. Throughout the years, serving customers across the GTA in this space, we found these to be the keys so many of our clients have used. Whether it’s cleaning out the yard, tackling a demolition, beginning a renovation, or taking on a new construction, the right dumpster rental company can make a huge difference in getting rid of waste.

If the dumpster rental company is local
By going with a local dumpster rental company, you’re saving yourself unnecessary transportation fees and a range of other issues that could present themselves. For example, a local company will know the rules and regulations regarding waste removal, recycling, and waste disposal. When it comes to renting a dumpster, a local company that is licensed and insured is the way to go.

Examine how a company disposes of its material
Waste disposal practices and ensuring that local laws are being followed is key to knowing you’re not doing anything wrong. While most of the materials you discard will likely end up in local landfills, some dumpster rental companies may seek to repurpose, recycle, and/or reuse some of the waste. As it pertains to quality of disposal, a dumpster rental company should be able to confidently recommend to you an appropriate size and type of dumpster required.
Pricing should be clearly understood
No hidden fees, pricing should always be clearly stated and easy to understand. Companies that are going to charge by weight and/or who are not able to provide you a clear answer on cost should be avoided. Considering you do not rent dumpsters regularly, the representative you speak with should not be trying to hide truck mileage fees, hours, or anything similar. Ask about if there are any penalty fees or anything else to keep in mind regarding price.
Defining delivery and pick-up
The right dumpster rental company will be able to provide an exact time for delivery and pick-up. Though it’s not always possible, most dumpster rental companies should be able to provide delivery within 24 hours. Always contact the company as far in advance as you can though to ensure you’re clear on the details. Inquire about same-day pick-up and/or if you need to container removed and returned so that you are able to fill it more than once. Be clear about the details of your project and weigh whether the answers being provided are adequate.
Core Mini Bins is a high quality dumpster rental company, serving Toronto and the GTA for more than 25 years. For every project, we’ve got a dumpster rental that can handle it. We’re no strangers to jobs no matter how big or small. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us today to find out more information on how we can provide you with safe, efficient waste removal.

To Build the Perfect Home Lawn, here’s what you need to Know

There’s a lot that goes into soil preparation when it comes to building a successful home lawn. How well the soil and site are prepped for the installation of a home lawn plays a key role into how well a lawn takes to its surroundings.

The first step to any soil preparation begins with eliminating weeds across the site. Prior to seeding, perennial weeds need to be handled. Among the options homeowners use to keep weeds under control include digging them up by hand or using systemic herbicide. Be it chemical in nature or organic, it is important to follow label directions when applying a weed control product.
Though some believe weed control to be the sole preparation to installing a lawn, prior to seeding, work the soil. For soils that are not top quality, adding organic matter is required. Consider compose, peat, and quality topsoil. Please note that sand is not a recommended material to improve low quality soil. Adding organic material comes with a wealth of different benefits, not just associated with improving soil structure. With it, there comes micro-organisms that help to absorb nutrients in the soil and that build life. Also, instead of layering organic material on the surface of the soil, mix it. Ideally, lawns should have a minimum of six inches of thoroughly prepared soil.

Soil testing is an aspect of building the perfect lawn that some may skip over but it does warrant attention. By testing the soil when you are planning your lawn project, you can see the oil pH and the nutrients in the soil. If nutrients need to be added or changes made, soil testing in the planning stages can help save money on implementing those modifications. When soil is being prepped, the mixing of fertilizer high in phosphorous is recommended. If a ‘starter fertilizer’ is not available, selecting a ‘balanced fertilizer’ (i.e. rich in balanced nutrients) can be used. Any fertilizer requirements should become evident at the soil testing stage.
Among the final points we want to make when it comes to building the perfect home lawn, identifying the final grade is something that requires discussion. Removing rock and other debris is a necessity. Any construction debris that is allowed to remain in the soil may cause problems down the line, in terms of the grass growing overtop. Any depressions or raised areas should be carefully flattened.
There is definitely an art to building the right lawn that goes beyond the basics of lawn care. Ideally, one wants to complete all of this work when it’s not too wet or dry. That way, the soil will perform the way you expect it to and should not provide much issue.
Invest the time to prepare the soil and site appropriately. By ignoring what it takes to create the perfect lawn, it can lead to an assortment of problems down the line that could very well destroy the look of your property. Remember, before doing any seeding or sodding, always soil test, make any nutrient or soil amendments as needed, ensure there is uniformity to the subsoil, and complete final grading. By following through on these steps, you set yourself up for success and maximize the opportunities on your property to have the best lawn possible.

Top 5 Mistakes made when Building a Gravel Driveway

More Canadian driveways than ever before are being filled with gravel as an effective, stable material. The benefits of building a gravel driveway are well-established. They’re more affordable than a paved driveway and have an equal lifespan.
As a material, gravel may be particularly attractive especially if you don’t mind the upkeep and maintenance required. Before beginning your build though, we recommend taking a quick browse through these common mistakes that others have made when planning and construction their gravel driveway.

Preparing and stripping the ground
Always, always, always prepare the ground before laying any gravel out. Leaving leaves, grass, weeds, or other vegetation across the surface you are dumping on is a hazard waiting to happen. To properly install a gravel driveway, you will need to remove the topsoil and get down to the hard rock underneath. This way, you know you have a solid foundation to build on.

Level the driveway for drainage
A driveway needs to be leveled properly to ensure it drains adequately and does not accumulate water in certain pockets. When a driveway is not draining properly, eroding water will inevitably damage it. In the worst of cases, it may even be left as a mud hole when the silt from below its surface gradually makes its way up. This silt is known to cause gravel to lose friction and weaken. Before long, your gravel driveway will be completely unrecognizable. This is why installing a layer of geotextile fabric between the subsoil and bottom layer of gravel is needed.
Use secure wooden forms or edges
To ensure that the gravel stays on the driveway, during the process of spreading it out, one must use edges or wooden forms to prevent it from overflowing. By not using these edges, the gravel will eventually scatter out, polluting sidewalks, lawns, and the street. Instead of using wooden edges, some have used or concrete. At the end of the day, it’s about keeping the gravel between the borders of where it needs to be.
Compacting base layers
A driveway should be made up of multiple layers of gravel, each compacted as appropriate. When gravel is not being compacted, a driveway loses shape. As a guide, ensure every layer is four inches thick. Build from gravel layers that go from the largest pieces underneath to the smallest pieces on top.
Choosing right size and shape
Using the wrong shape and size of gravel is the easiest way to ensuring that a gravel driveway does not hold. The base layer of gravel requires pieces to be three to four inches in size so that when a vehicle rolls over the driveway, it does not sink. Angular, sharp edges are required for these pieces. Round-edge pieces won’t lock in, unlike those with sharper edges. Meanwhile, the top layer should be comprised of gravel pieces smaller than a golf ball. By pouring out gravel like this, each piece will conveniently fall into place and lock in with those around it to form a foundation that will not sink or shift.

Why Dumpster Rental Companies emphasize Safety Tips and Tricks so Much More

As one of Toronto and the GTA’s premiere dumpster rental and waste collection companies, we understand the value of safety and security. To customers, this counts for a lot.
In order to bring the best service to our clientele, safety needs to be at the forefront. Dumpsters are heavy and they create an environment where there is increased possibility of someone being hurt or harmed.
There are many safety procedures we have in place to ensure our dumpsters are used correctly. We have also written on a number of safety subjects related to dumpsters and waste collection, informing our customers on how best to proceed when renting from us.

We strongly advise anyone handling debris to wear the appropriate safety clothing, including gloves, foot protection, eye protection, and tough-material clothes. The last thing we want is personal injury occurring to someone handling a dumpster rental. Any clothing that is worn should prevent the wearer from getting scratched or snagged on something.
With regards to what’s being dumped, if you are unclear on the safety of materials, always consult with your dumpster rental company first. Hazardous waste should never be placed in the dumpster. By doing so, you may be subject to additional charges. It will also contaminate whatever else is in there, resulting in any recyclable materials have to be discarded.
Any dumpster unit should never be loaded beyond the edge of its walls. When it is, we run the risk of seeing falling debris potentially injure those in close proximity. It bears keeping in mind that the dumpster will be moved at the end of one’s rental period and thereby to ensure that anything inside is secure enough to be able to withstand transportation. To this point, one must ensure that any lightweight materials such as cardboard are pinned down by heavier items. Also, if a renter can distribute as evenly as possible the weight of materials in the dumpster, that goes a long way in keeping things secure.
To keep customers safe throughout the dumpster loading process, ensure that it is not positioned nearly electricity lines. If you require having to move the dumpster after we have dropped off the container, do not attempt to do it yourself. We would much rather prefer you calling us and we can provide some different options, instead of seeing a client attempt it alone. Any children or pets should be kept away from the dumpster, and the immediate area should be as cleared and clean as possible.
The weight of the dumpster before it’s even filled also presents its own set of hazards. Installing the dumpster on a concrete floor, for example, may potentially break it as a dumpster is being loaded.
No customer can ever be too safe when it comes to their dumpster. If you have any questions or concerns about safety, be sure to speak with us directly. We would be happy to provide more information on safety processes and what materials are not allowed to be placed inside a dumpster.
