Why Wal-Mart Committing to zero Food Waste is a Huge Victory

Wal-Mart recently made a commitment to zero food waste in all of its Canadian locations by 2025. This is big news for the recycling and food waste industry, and continues to support the philosophy that zero food waste is an attainable goal.

In the last few years, Wal-Mart has upped its efforts in waste management. The company currently distributes a fruits and vegetables-based employee manual Would I Buy It? which is designed to help employees identify items that are no longer appropriate for sale.

Across 411 Canadian locations, Wal-Mart has also implemented numerous food waste practices that have cut their overall waste down by approximately 23 percent since 2015. Then, in April, Wal-Mart announced an additional $19 million commitment through the Walmart Foundation to tackle systemic issues contributing to food waste.

A large part of all these eco-friendly efforts will be to bring Wal-Mart down to a zero food waste company – something that they have repeatedly said is achievable by 2025. In the food waste category, there have been similar commitments made by competitors including the Metro grocery chain which is aiming for the same accomplishment by 2020.

The participation of Wal-Mart is such a huge victory for the movement in Canada for many reasons. They are one of the biggest multi-national corporations operating within Canadian borders and have the opportunity to set the standard by which competitors would be expected to follow. Though Wal-Mart has had its share of criticism in the past, their commitment to zero food waste is something to be applauded.

To provide some insight into what exactly ‘zero food waste’ means, according to international definitions, it is about reducing the amount of food sent to our landfills and achieving a diversion of minimum 90 percent. To accomplish that, Wal-Mart and other grocers will have to step up their game in repacking donations, recycling what can be recycled, and composting.

As the waste environment goes, food is a major concern which also comes at a cost. Canada is estimated to waste $31 billion worth of food every year – that’s a big number. From a global perspective, one third of all food produced ends up wasted. That means all the water, land, and fertilizer used to grow this food is also wasted in the process. As food waste ends up in our landfills, it decomposes and releases methane, which is a gas many argue to be a huge contributor to climate change.

As of right now, there is no company anywhere near the size of Wal-Mart who has made the pledge to zero food waste. Cutting waste down to as low as is manageable will also help to support a positive company image and increase the efficiency within their own business. This makes it all the more reason for other businesses – small and large – to make their own commitment to reaching a zero waste goal.

Already, Wal-Mart has established organic recycling programs at some locations, which will convert spoiled food into feed and compost. There are also some stores that have established partnerships with local food banks, and fruits and vegetables near spoiled are being repackaged and discounted to attempt to recoup investment. Needless to say, there are a lot of positive changes out there being made in the name of recycling and zero food waste. As a waste management company with a strong commitment to reuse and reduce, we support Wal-Mart’s efforts.

Why is Waste Management turning a Big Profit while Recycling Revenues are Struggling

In region across Canada, waste management companies are seeing revenues soar. After all, waste management seems to be some pretty big business! Comparatively, recycling seems to be struggling as a cost-viable option.

Why recycling revenues are so much lower than waste management profits for disposal companies can be attributed to many different reasons. The biggest reason seemingly appears to be contamination rates having increased in Canada in the past decade. As more municipalities have turned to recycling, the level of education on what to recycle has not necessarily followed the expansion. Thereby, contamination rates can be as high as 40 percent in some regions. Though recycling is a righteous goal, there needs to be more effort made to lower contamination rates. As contamination is allowed to continue to happen at such high percentages, this has a significant financial impact on recycling revenues.

In addition to contamination being an issue, transportation costs for recycling are an issue. Waste management processes have been ongoing for decades while some recycling processes are still new. This means having to transport materials across further distances to get them to reach the assigned recycling plants. Ideally, in the future, there will be more localized recycling processes with a wider variety of facilities to accommodate all kinds of different materials.  Further adding to recycling operating costs, what one can get for the material recycled has shrunk comparatively to last year. Some commodity prices have fallen by as much as 36 percent compared to last year, meaning the materials recycled are not able to be sold at the same rates and thus providing lower returns.

Taking all this into consideration, when one factors in possible expansion costs, increased operating costs, and increased processing fees, recycling can end up being a very expensive endeavor for some companies.

Why companies and municipalities are continuing to pursue recycling processes for profit is because this is going to be the future of waste management in Canada and the United States. Recycling is a steady investment for the future and marks a path towards improving revenues. Landfills may in fact become a thing of the past as more societies are moving towards zero waste. There are some in the waste management industry who believe it to be a matter of time before recycling overtakes landfill disposal as the favored revenue waste category.

Across the world, there is a lot of prominent research, development, and investment being made into recycling. Though waste management is where the big profits are at, companies are re-investing. Today, waste disposal is being de-refined as a process by which materials can be recycled, repurposed, and reused. Even as soon as 2025, things will have moved to more reprocessing materials rather than dumping.

As a Toronto recycling and waste management company, Core Mini Bins strongly believes that the future of waste management is not in landfills. There’s so much opportunity to recycle and repurpose materials out there, and we are proud to be one of the companies doing so. For all of your residential, commercial, or industrial waste management needs, please get in touch. We would be happy to discuss with you your options for waste disposal and recycling, and to provide competitive rates for a premium, high quality Toronto waste management service.

What happens when Hazardous Materials find their Way into the soil on a Construction Site

As a Toronto construction waste management company, we believe proper waste removal and reliable hazardous materials processing to be a necessity. A project in Fort Worth, Texas serves as one of the most recent examples of what happens when hazardous materials find their way into the soil at a construction site.
what-happens-when-hazardous-materials-find-their-way-in-the-soil-on-a-construction-site
The Panther Island project, an 800-acre island being constructed next to downtown Fort Worth, has been an ongoing construction project for numerous years. Recently, it was found that approximately thirty of the construction workers associated with the project were exposed to hazardous materials – something that could have easily been avoided according to recent analyses.

Waste management companies and hazardous materials waste removal companies are a necessity for any construction site. They should be able to assess the location and remove any hazardous materials from the site that could be a danger to workers.

As it pertains to this example, it was cancer-causing benzene that was found in the soil surrounding the Panther Island project site. Though it is not known whether management knew about this or not, they did not disclose the presence of contaminated soil. When the issue was brought up with management, they have subsequently been accused of charging penalties of work delays and withholding payments when questions began to be asked.

This is precisely the opposite reaction one wants to take when there is hazardous materials or waste of any kind on-site. When this type of material is found, it’s a requirement to have it properly disposed of. By not doing so, that could mean fatal consequences for the unlucky construction workers who have to be on the site for hours at a time.

Though none of the workers have seemingly been affected in permanent ways, when workers began to feel nauseous and dizzy and had to be pulled from the site, management figured something was up. Today, the unprofessional handling of the Panther Island project contamination is being questioned by the authorities and construction crews associated with the site.

Construction management companies and government officials have a responsibility to report any hazardous waste on-site. There is an argument to be made that officials chose not to report the hazardous waste on the Panther Island project because, had they done so, the costs of the project would have increased substantially.

The contaminated soil, in this example, did not originate from the project itself but what was there before it. The removal of an underground oil storage tank is believed to have leaked the material long before construction on Panther Island ever began. The first signs of something being not so right with the site appeared during the excavation process when grass was planted and then died a month later. Subsequently, the grass was replanted and then it died again. Things only progressively got worse from there, as evidenced with workers becoming temporarily sick. Thankfully, there were no fatalities or long-term illnesses that are having to be dealt with.

As a waste management and excavation company, and having worked on numerous Toronto construction sites, we know this is very serious stuff. In 99.9% of cases, Toronto construction companies will work wonders to ensure that a site is safe for workers. Throughout the years, Core Mini Bins has continued to work alongside Toronto construction managers and contractors to maximize safety on-site with waste removal and disposal. For more information on how to keep your construction site safe from waste-related hazards, please contact a representative at Core Mini Bins today.

The Hazards of completing an Excavation and other Challenges

Performing an excavation comes with its own set of challenges. The hazards of completing an excavation should be well understood prior to beginning. As a Toronto excavation company, there is no higher priority to us than safety.
the-hazards-of-completing-an-excavation-and-other-challenges
As excavation hazards are left to fester, this can potentially result in serious injuries. Workers and contractors can be critically injured and/or even die in cave-ins. Needless to say, small jobs of short durations are just as dangerous as larger jobs. The development of trenches for water, gas, electrical, and sewer lines are common among excavation projects. Whenever Core Mini Bins is hired for an excavation, we adhere strictly to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and local regulations for construction projects.
The most common excavation hazards in the Toronto region includes falling into trenches, tripping on equipment or debris, excavated materials falling on workers, being exposed to underground services, being exposed to overhead electrical cables, having unstable adjacent structures, mishandled or poorly placed materials, working in a hazardous atmosphere with noxious gases or a lack of oxygen, being exposed to toxic or irritating or flammable and explosive gases, and incidents involving vehicles and similar equipment.
To combat these excavation hazards, planning is key. Trenches need to be monitored, equipment needs to be properly stored, and debris should be disposed of in an appropriate time frame. The protection of workers on-site is also a priority, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary safety equipment. There also should be a safety representative on-site to identify electrical cables, underground services, hazardous atmospheres, flammable and explosive gases, and more. By following through on these things, one can maximize the safety on-site and ensure that any hazards are addressed in a timely manner.
As an experienced excavation company, we are routinely tasked with the removal of debris and excavated soil near the excavation site. In addition, we make the necessary arrangements to protect workers from falling, plan for removing water in the exaction, and providing some insight into soil types and what sloping, shoring, or pre-fabricated, hydraulic, or engineer systems are required. This is just some of the knowledge and expertise that we carry with us when we walk into an excavation site. When appropriate, we can assist in identifying entrances and exits from the excavation, procure the equipment and tools needed, analyze the possibility of environmental hazards, and providing the necessary guidance to workers, ensuring safety is not forgotten.
Core Mini Bins maintains a team of highly trained, specialized excavation professionals ready to oversee the work and get down to business. Throughout the jobs we take, we work hard to meet customers’ demands every step of the way.
As Toronto excavation professionals, we do not compromise on safety in any way and will work to address any ongoing hazards in a timely, appropriate fashion. A necessary component to any Toronto construction project, over the years, we have handled hundreds of mini-excavations and full excavations across the region. Consistently delivering outstanding performance time and time again, commercial and residential excavation services is something we take a lot of pride in. The hazards of completing an excavation and the many challenges involved can be successfully navigated with experience in the field. Please feel free to contact Core Mini Bins for your next Toronto excavation project.

Are All Products marketed as ‘Recyclable’ actually Recyclable – a revealing look!

Confusion in recycling is commonplace. Even those with the knowledge on how to read symbols and local regulations, recycling varies from city to city across Canada. Because of this, sadly some products marketed as recyclable cannot in fact be recycled in some Canadian cities.

The recycling symbol that appears on many household products, as it actually turns out, is not really worth much. It indicates the product being used ‘could be’ recycled however it does not necessarily denote tossing it into the recycling.

In some cases, it might even be contamination and there are many reasons why this is the case. Some local recycling programs may choose not to recycle certain products and/or may not be able to recycle them due to lack of technology, investment, and equipment.

The reality for consumers and companies who are trying to do the good thing by recycling is that they are sometimes being misled. As a waste management and recycling company, the last thing we want is for our consumers to be confused about what goes where in garbage and recycling.

As evidenced, one of the biggest challenges facing Canada is a lack of cohesiveness across cities’ recycling programs. Core Mini Bins is one of the many waste management companies across the country calling for more unity and collaboration in recycling. Secondly, there needs to be an education given to manufacturers and retailers on what products to put in the market as ‘recyclable’. The frustration experienced from consumers looking to recycle, companies looking to do the right thing by using recyclable product, and governments seeking to increase recycling numbers is a three-pronged problem in need of a sizeable solution.

To answer the question of whether all products marketed as ‘recyclable’ are actually recyclable, evidently they’re not all recyclable. It’s not from a lack of trying however on behalf of companies. A recent study determined that though some companies may be either intentionally or unintentionally spreading false or misleading claims under the Competition Act, and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, most companies who market products as recyclable when they are in fact not are doing so out of false knowledge.

When Core Mini Bins is hired to take care of a company’s waste or recycling, we have done our best to set up appropriate partners across the GTA to help with that. To any resident interested in doing business with a Toronto recycling company or Toronto waste management company, we would be happy to provide insight into what products are recycling in the GTA and what are not.

If you’re wondering what to do with materials you need disposed of, call Core Mini Bins. If it can be repurposed, reused, or recycled, we will find a way to do so as long as the facilities are available. The thing about recycling we have found is that there’s much more recycling we, as a society, could be doing however the facilities are simply not always local. In the future, along with countless other organizations committed to recycling, we are hoping to change that through more specialized facilities.

There is no reason that a recyclable product gets tossed out just because it is not able to be recycled where you live. There’s a change that needs to come and that’s what Core Mini Bins continues to advocate for.

6 Things no one ever Tells you about Doing a Demolition

As fun and easy as demolition may seem on HGTV, it’s not all swinging a sledgehammer and knocking down walls. In real life, it’s a lot of planning, things not going the way we want them, surprises occasionally coming around the corner, and time. Needless to say, demolition does not happen in a single afternoon. It can take days to complete a demolition of a home. Too many Torontonians think of demolition as something it somewhat is not. Here are the top six things we hear from Canadians as to what no one tells them about doing a demolition.
6-Things-no-one-ever-Tells-you-about-Doing-a-Demolition
#1 – The mess and debris needs to be removed
The biggest problem that needs to be solved with a demolition is where to put the mess it creates. Rubble needs to be hauled and if you’re renovating above the first floor, that becomes even more challenging. In an apartment building, on average, it can take weeks to get debris down and outside. All in all, hiring a dumpster rental company, demolition garbage removal, and/or waste management company is a necessity to tackle the mess that is about to happen.
#2 – Neighbors and local regulations control the demolition schedule
Unless you’re living in the middle of the woods, demolition does not get to begin early in the morning and into the late night. Knocking down walls is loud and unpleasant. Be sure to check out what the local laws are relating to noise and do the polite thing by letting your neighbours know what is going on before you begin.
#3 – There’s always a lot of dust that is near impossible to get rid of
The dust kicked up in a demolition is nothing to dismiss. It’s like being in the worst Toronto snowstorm ever. Specific materials, such as plaster walls, are particularly known for making a mess. In many cases, we advise demolition workers to use face masks to continue their work. Also, after the demolition is complete, a pretty thorough scrub will have to happen to get all the dust out of there. To mitigate some of the effects of dust, consider using a tarp to cover the floor and other items in the room.
#4 – Demolition takes so long!
The average demolition takes weeks to complete so plan accordingly. The more help you have, the faster the job is likely to get done. Even so, it’s always surprising how long it takes to actually knock down a kitchen, a wall, or whatever else that might be planned for a demolition.
#5 – Expect to discover problems with expensive, complex solutions proposed
Across most demolitions, naturally, there are problems discovered. These problems are usually not resolved quickly. This could delay a demolition and/or increase costs significantly. It may even change the entire plan behind a project. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled and be open to adapting to any unexpected discoveries that you might come across.

#6 – Demolition is a perfect breeding ground for arguments
Be it between co-workers, spouses, or family, demolition make getting into heated arguments easy. Firstly, it is a very boring process while still being tremendously physically difficult at times, which can increase tensions in the room. Secondly, there are so many decisions to be made and those decisions need to come fast as to save time and money. If the person overseeing the demolition is not decisive, it could mean hours of delayed work because of someone not knowing what kind of faucets they want to have.
